The Making of Soho Place: TRAVERTINE

Client: Derwent London
Location: Northern Italy; Pisa & Rome

Our journey began in Tivoli, Rome, at a quarry known for its production of high-quality travertine. Here, we witnessed the initial extraction of the stone, a critical first step in the creation of architectural features. This process highlighted the balance between resource extraction and environmental conservation, a fundamental aspect of sustainable architecture.

From Rome, we moved to Pacifici, near Pisa, where the focus shifted to the fabrication of the stone. In this phase, expert craftspeople meticulously transformed each rough-hewn travertine block into a finely finished architectural piece. Particular attention was given to vein matching, a critical step to ensure a unified aesthetic in the final construction. This in-depth exploration provided insights into the complex journey each piece of travertine undertakes, from raw stone in a Roman quarry to a sophisticated component of a landmark London building.
